Cyprus Forum
CyprusForum.com was established by Savas Savvides in 1996. It was one of the first websites on the web. It was also the first online (and offline) community that allowed Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to come together and discuss possible solutions to the Cyprus problem.
CyprusForum had about two thousand members at some point. The solution that was agreed by most of the members was along the following lines:
1. Regarding properties: The original owner continues to be the legal owner but if there is a building on the property (that was built afterwards by someone else) or a family or a business in a building (that existed there before) the original owner and the later user had to come to terms on their own (such as get shares on the hotel that was built on the land), or over time have a committee decide the percentage of each owner. Such decision could include the option to auction the land and the building together and have a third party buyout both. But the number of properties/building coming up for auction should be limited a number of properties per year, so the market is not flooded with properties for auction, thus bringing prices down for all.
2. Regarding the Turkish Army: The army was to stay for a number of years in a military base. This would have allowed the Turkish politicians not to have a political cost at home, while making the Turkish Cypriots feel safer. At the same time, Turkey, Greece and the UK were to give up any constitutional intervention rights in Cyprus. This military base could not be renewed after the pre-agreed duration of 20 or 30 years (the so-called sunset clause).
3.Build new cities: On the side of the Pentadaktylos mountain that faces Kerynia, new towns were to be build and Turkish Cypriot families were to be given new homes, new mosques, new schools, etc. The idea was to empty as many homes abandoned by Greek Cypriots (by force) and at the same time give the Turkish Cypriots some towns that would be (at least at the beginning) homogeneously Turkish Cypriot. Please recall that the Turkish Cypriots before 1974 were spread all over Cyprus and did not really have any villages or towns that were exclusively occupied by Turkish Cypriots (with a few noted exceptions).
